The massive Montana mesothelioma case may be finally coming to a resolution. The state is in the “final stages” of negotiating a $43 million settlement with the 1,100 Libby asbestos victims, the Daily Inter Lake reports.
The work in the mine allegedly caused substantial airborne dust containing asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma asbestos cancer is a life-threatening disease that can affects millions of people that are exposed to asbestos due to their work environment. Interestingly in this case, most of the victims didn’t work in the mine, but became sick after their family members came home with dust on them from the mine. Cases also allegedly involved children playing in the residue of mines.
In the big picture, the settlements are not large for an asbestos case. Victims are also concerned that the State of Montana is not taking the blame. “They’re not admitting any guilt,” one anonymous source said, the Montana Western News reports. “I feel like they’re gonna brush us under the mat.”
