New sex offender laws in California may require sexual predators to carry new specially marked IDs. 

California lawmakers are backing new legislation requiring marked IDs for sex offenders.

A new full legislative package was rolled out on National Missing Children’s Day and endorsed by Maurice Dubois, father of slain Escondido teenager Amber Dubois, the Associated Press reports.

As previously discussed, John Albert Gardner III was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the rapes and murders of Amber Dubois and Poway teen, Chelsea King.

The bill was co-authored by Assemblymen Pedro Nava and Paul Cook.

Some other states already have a sex offender law in place that requires them to carry marked driver’s licenses, as previously discussed.

For example, in Delaware, the letter “Y” is included on a driver’s license as a signal to officers that they are dealing with a sex offender.

In Louisiana, it’s “SEX OFFENDER,” written in capital orange letters, as previously discussed. State law enforcement officials have said the label on the driver’s license helps to provide invaluable information.

Some lawmakers have said they would be willing to impose the requirement only on people who committed the most serious and violent offenses instead of all registered offenders.

As previously discussed, the parents of Chelsea King are also pushing for stricter penalties on sex offenders.

By pushing for revision of California’s sex offender laws, King’s parents hope to prevent sexual predators from having a second chance. 

California’s legislation is the latest legal offensive against registered sex offenders.
